Going Doughnuttery Over Flavored Sugars

Doughnuttery New York, NY

If you’re wandering around the Highline or happen to make your way into Chelsea Market, like I did, I highly recommend making a pit stop at Doughnuttery to sample some of their pint-sized donuts. Pastry Chef Katie Rosenhouse opted not for the giant, fluffy donuts that other artisanal shops fry up, but for a place that satisfies the snacker by producing mini donuts. They’re made to order on a little fryer conveyer belt that I often see at Apple Cider Farms in the fall. And when they make their way from the fryer to the cooling rack, the mini O’s are immediately moved into a paperbag and generously sprinkled and shaken with a number of unique sugar flavors. I selected the following four:
Cacaoboy – cacao nibe, chocolate cookies, mesquite
Bam Berry – blueberry, acai, maqui berry
Rosemary Road – rosemary, roasted cornmeal, fig
Mistletoe – gingerbread, cranberry, sage

They also give you a dipping sauce choice. Go for it, it’s worth it. My choice was a raspberry balsamic dipping sauce (almost went for the beer caramel sauce). They were all hot and crisp and didn’t make you feel like you were pounding a ton of donuts…merely tasting a few small bits. The Mistletoe was a flavor journey through the holidays and the Cacaoboy was my favorite with strong chocolate notes.
It wouldn’t be my first donut stop in NYC, especially at the $1 per mini donut price tag, but they’re certainly worth a stop if you’re in the area. A fun and sugary take on the donut.
